My great grandfather (Fred R. Meyer)'s obituary had mentioned that Chief Clinton Rickard of the Tuscaroras and Chief Richard Big Kettle of the Senecas had participated in his funeral. Chief Big Kettle had sung a ceremonial farewell song in Seneca tongue at his funeral. My grandfather had a special interest and close relationship with the indians of Western New York and the Dakotas. I am beginning to gather information my great grandfather's "work" and your site was very helpful.

Hello, My name is Erica McCormick I am a senior at Princeton University. I am of mixed Seminole and African Heritage, and because of my grandparents' influence I have always been interested in how public policy has effected Native and African American people. Consequently, I am writing my thesis on specialized housing and social indicators of Native Americans and African Americans. I was wondering if you could distribute my contact information and project statement. I would really like as much impute as possible for my thesis, as it will most likely be published and could have a beneficial effect on upcoming housing policy. Unfortunately, the deadline is within the next couple of weeks and I would need the information as soon as possible. I would appreciate any help you could possibly give me. Any impute from younger members would also be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Erica McCormick Contact Information Erica L. McCormick 312 1901 Hall Princeton University Princeton, NJ 08544 (609) 258-7181 email: ericam@princeton.edu fax: 609-258-2649 For a man's house is his castle, for where shall a man be safe, if it be not in his house? Adequate housing is more than four walls and a roof, it is a place where a person can effectively raise their family and remove from the hardships of life. The home is an anchor that provides the foundation for all other endeavors. The ramifications of poor housing and location can reverberate for a life time. In my thesis research, I intend to compare the evolution of housing and residential segregation of African Americans with the alternative isolation experienced by some Native Americans on reservations. Through this study I hope to propose policy implications for the restructuring of American housing patterns that would maximize the economic, social, health, and psychological opportunities for African and Native Americans. In order to accomplish this goal, I would like to gather as much personal impute and experience from members of both communities. If you have any information pertaining to this topic that you would like to share, please feel free to contact me by any of the convenient methods listed above. If you don't believe you have any pertinent information, but wouldn't mind answering a few quick questions, also feel free to contact me. Public policy is driven, in part, by new findings that highlight areas that have been overlooked, forgotten, or never properly researched. The theory supporting my thesis is in its infancy and in order to insure its maturation I need as much help as possible. Thank you in advance for your time and effort. Erica McCormick

WANTED: Info on NEZ PERCE involvement in the Native American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and later. My daughter's father was Nez Perce, he was adopted at a young age and he knew little of his ancestory and heritage, I want my daughter to know more. I have located some Nez Perce history for the mid to late 1800s but no later history. I must do a paper on the civil rights movement for a school project and want to focus my topic on Native American Movement with an emphasis on the Nez Perce, because of my daughters ancestory. Any information or help with resources would greatly be appreciated. THANK YOU

I'm originally from Ontario Canada and came to the US to attend school. I attempted to get a SSN to work but was told I had to go to immigration. To make a long story short, I was given a visa (permanent residency status). My problem: I am 50% bloodline (status). My 10 year old son does not meet the 50% as per Jay Treaty. I contacted immigration prior to relocating and gave them my status and his. I was advised to have custody and school documents but was never informed of any special documentation needs for my son. In December 1997 I sent my son to visit his father and my family in Canada. Upon his return, he was not allowed to re-enter the US. Airport immigration allowed him to fly home a day after scheduled on humanitarian grounds with notification to go to AZ immigration. They paroled him into the US but he is not allowed to leave until paperwork for sponsorship is complete (I 130/131, I think) I was supposed to receive notification that his application for sponsorship was received in May of this year (still don't have)I am told once this is confirmed, it will be five years before it will be processed. In the meantime he has very limited access to family. We are here by ourselves with no family network. I can't believe that something can't be done to allow him to visit family in Canada. I have a custody agreement with my son's father where my son is to be with him for the summer and major school holidays. I can't honor this agreement for fear that my son won't be able to re-enter the US. I don't know if this message will be read. If it is, I would greatly appreciate any help.

I have enjoyed looking and reading about the news of the Tuscarora. Through a geneology search, it was discovered that my father was a cousin of Chief Clinton Rickard. I am an adult leader in Middle Tn Council of Boy Scouts of America and an Advisor to the Trail of Tears District Order of the Arrow. My Regalia is based on the limited information of Clinton Rickards jacket. It has been an honor in talking to kids and adults alike to be able to tell of Chief Clinton Rickard. The book "Fighting Tuscarora", was the only information I had for a long time. I would love to have more information about him and his life. Thank You Kerry

Hello, Well, I not sure exactly how to ask this question, but here it goes, I'm a member of the Tonawanda Band of Seneca's and was given a tax exempt Card and number, the only thing is I not sure what I can use it for since I do not live on the res- ervation. I am currently living in Virginia and I don't know if it's possible to use the tax exempt card here in VA or if it's only good in The State of New York. On the back of the card it has a list of treaties and I'm not sure what they all mean in plain english so that's why I'm asking for you to give me some understanding of the card. Can you also tell me as far as Income tax would this card keep me from paying income tax. Thank you, Sheri K. Jones 9520 Hagel Circle Lorton, Virginia 22079

Thank you for having this information available on the internet. It makes it so easy to research and learn historical facts. I am researching my American Indian heritage of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. Tracing your family tree is very difficult once you get so far back if your family didn't keep written documents. Oral history ends when there is no one left to repeat it. I appreciate your hard work involved in getting all this information on the internet. Thanks.

I am SO happy to have found this website!!! Have been interested in this subject all my life. PLEASE do any of you know how to contact a man named Russell Means? He is an American Indian, and wrote his autobiography "Where White Men Fear To Tread". I saw him and a man named Kevin Matthews on a cable channel the other day, talking about Indian rights, and Mr. Means said a very very interesting thing on national television, although I really don't know how many people saw it, and also it was a re-run from last October,,,,,,he said that the earth has been ruled by men for the last 6000 years, and look at the way they have ruined everything. He said "What we need now are the women..." and everything women have to offer. I am a woman! I want to help to START to bring the world back to the way it was meant to be...to bring people to the realization of what we have done to each other, and to make it stop. If anyone out there knows how to get in touch with him, PLEASE let me know. Thank you. Also, if anyone feels the same about these things as I do, please write me back. Thanks. Dianne from Illinois

Thanks for being here I've only just started to reconnect to where I belong. My cousin Felton Green found out that our Grandmother & Great Grandmother were of the Tuscarora people a few years ago and that opened my heart to Finaly understand the feelings that the Great spirit has been putting in my heart and I couldn't understand from the age of 3-4. Now I've found your page with the help of Thunder a Lakota which I can't thank her enough for. To find the guidance and understanding I seek here in Australia is hard as I feel in my heart so many appear to follow the Native American path because they view the culture as fashionable or trendy. Don't get me wrong there are many who follow the true path but many are just trying to "Cash in" and this is very disheartening. Thanks again for just being there - Glenn Green.

I am full blood Cree living in the US. I have a problem. I cannot bring my Eagle Feathers, given to me by the Canadian Fish and Wildlife into the US because of Code 50 of the Federal Register regarding transportation of endangered species across the the border. I am registered with my reserve in Canada and cannot obtain a US Cites import permit. I have been trying for years to obtain the permit, but they said the code (part22) has to be revized, and as of now, it is illegal for Native Americans to transport their regalia (feathers) across the border. I have been told that the revision would be soon for five years now. by the Fish and Wildlife (U.S.) Can you please help me. Is there a lobby of Native Americans to represent us , or am I fighting this matter alone. It affects every Native American who must cross the border (Pow Wows , etc) My daughters and I dance, and we are being denied our right to have and use our feathers. I have talked to many people in the Fish and Wildlife, Law enforcement division, and our paperwork has " been on the desk " for years. Please, this is a very important issue. Thankyou. Please write back Louise Brown lcb@enter.net

Sometimes stumbling through the web is the only way to find good websites regarding Native Peoples. I'm an Odawa from Wikwemikong, Manitoulin Island and I'm going to school at Michigan Technological University. As a Canadian going to school in the U.S. I'm interested in finding out more about the Jay Treaty and how it affects me. I'm also writing a paper about this, and finding information like this is very helpful and interesting.

I have learned of the injustices and cruelities put on your culture. Stay as one and keep fighting. To win a war, you need a unit. To live you need each other. Thank to all the people who worked on the web site. It has benefited my knowledge better and provided valuable information for a research paper.
