Recently (through geneology), I found my Great-great grandfather on the 1803 special census of the Nottoway Reservation,in South- hampton County of Virginia. I also found out that my Great-Grandmother was Tuscarora, from Pittsburgh,Pa.. Her name was Anna Hughs, or Annie Huce. This information came from relatives who took care of her before she died in 1969. Thus my interest in the Tuscaroras. I will be at the border crossing this year, and will be carring the sign of The United Nation of Nottoway in Ohio. Please look for me.

i am a man who is looking for some kind of opportunity to work for something that will benefit native americans, in whatever humble way. i "stumbled" onto this site on the web, and am hoping there is someone out there who can put me in touch with an AIM or other non-governmental organization that i might be able to link up with, in arizona. i am retired, 52 years old, and still strong, and fair to middling smart. i love everything i know about the original peoples that populated the north american continent, and want to help in the native american fight to preserve their invaluable heritage. i live on the east edge of phoenix (mesa, actually) and have been searching for a link to maricipa/pima or mcdowell agencies that are not connected to the US government, with no luck so far. i have looked on the web for an AIM chapter in this part of arizona, but cannot locate one. can anyone out there help me? john morstad of mesa, arizona (i understand there may be government agencies that are worthy of respect, but am very skeptical that any of those that purport to represent the interests of native americans are among them.)

Greetings; It is encouraging to find someone who is standing up for the Rights of our people. My husband and I have been attempting to do the same for the past five years and have faced great opposition. We are of native decent and are unincorporated inhabitants pursuant to the Louisiana purchase Treaty of 1803. As such we have asked the local officials to abide by the constitutions and laws of the State of Missouri and the United States which includes the Jay treaty and the Ghent Treaty, however they refused.These Local officials not only refused, but they went farther and threatened us that " you'll be there with your law books in your hands, standing up for your rights, and there will be seventy gunners behind your back, waiting to gun you down." The local judge threatened that " When we get mad at you, break into your houses, drag you out and throw you in jail, burn your houses with fire and steal your children, everything will be allright". On April 18th 1999 they began to carry out their threats. That Day they set a trap on the highway for my husband and caught him and two of our children. It all happened as my husband and the children were going off to work for the week. They were peacefully and lawfully traveling down the highway when they came upon a patrol car by the side of the road and a man dressed in shorts and a t-shirt threw a nail strip across the road in front of them and pulled a gun on them; of course they had to stop or be shot. Had my husband done anything wrong? No, he had only stood up for our rights according to law. So from April 18th 1999 through August 10th 1999 my husband was imprisoned for 91 days all because of our peaceful stand for the Rights of our people. While so imprisoned my husband was constantly faced with the pressure to give up our rights but refused. He suffered from medical neglect, once passing out in the shower he was taken to the hospital for observation and after one hour taken back to jail. The doctor prescribed medication, but the jailer never got it for him til three days later and much pain. All this time I with the most of our 9 children had to remain in hiding because of their threats and the fact that they had put out an unlawful warrant for my arrest. To make a long story shorter, they denied us all our legal rights and finally dismissed the charges against my husband and " kicked" him out of jail. never even offering him a ride home. Not having found an attorney willing to stand up for our Rights we have now filed suit in the Federal against all the officials involved and are waiting and hoping for the help of Almighty God to win back what we have lost and receive redress for the greivances caused. So as stated before, it sure is nice to see someone standing up for our Rights. It appears from what I read that Chief Rikard stood up for some of the same things for which we have been trying to. We are looking for my husbands Grandfather's tribe in upstate New York. We believe it to be Iroquios. It is a sketchy story at best. Grandfather's name was Frank Hill. He was one of two very weak twins (birthdate unknown at this time) delivered by a midwife. The doctor came after the birth and wrote two death certificates. One twin did die The midwife nurse Grandfather to good health. He grew up somewhere there in upstate NY. When he was a young man he got in a fight (with a white man) he thought he kill him so he ran away. He found out years later that the man lived. Then when he filed for his social security, he found out there was never a birth certificate. I would imagine that he was about 1890-95? We would really love claim his rights for our two sons,daughter,and three grandchildren. I haven't had this information very long. I tried to find something in the early eighties as my son wanted to go to college and we couldn't afford to send him. What should we do to find more information? Thank You Marcia Aikin

My great grandmother was Indian. Her name was Mary Jane Hill and her father was William Hill, Mother Harriett Hill. She was born October 30,1850. It is believed she was Cherokee. The Dawes of 1896 shows a Mary Jane Hill , but I have been unsuccessful checking out for the microfilm to see if this is the same one. She was born in York State. Married Adam Bates in Ohio. If someone could be of help I would be so grateful.

I have long sine had a true leaning and thirst for native culture and wisdom. I am irish and descend from the Celtic tribes ( there are many religious and social similarities between native americans and the celts )I pray to the great spirit and the earth mother that the nations hoop will be mended. My Tribal council is looking for the treatry data that explains that native americans have the right to hunt and fish in canda and the USA. I enjoyed seeing the site on the IDLA. I did a research paper in my English class titled The Unknown Civil Rights Movement. The class also required a speech and visual aide. My classmates were surprised to see the struggles of the Native Americans that had gone without notice. If I opened one eye to see there needs to be a change, then that is one eye that my make a difference. Thank you for the information. I pray that I can use it to benefit the movement some how. I am a member of the Texas Indians whom had been declared non-existant by Whites for some time. I am also a lawyer and have come to understand that it was largely the lawyers who placed us in the situation Indian People presently are in. Those so called Great White Fathers never really invented much. They just took a whole bunch. They never even had the concept of "Property" all worked out the way they let us on to believe. In Europe, the King owned everything and it was only whey they came over here and realized that they could take everything from us that they came onto ideas of "equality" and the like. Or, of making the world talk about those Ideas while they made us the "Wards" incapable of their "Greatness" as set forth in the frudulent text books. Ideas which they have never upheld for all or truly taken to heart. That is why they excluded us from the Constitution. "The People" who are supposedly in charge do not include Indians but the Supreme Court (supposedly whom feeds me) has worked the magic of the common law to essentially rationalize what they stole from us in retrospect. The lawyers today know this but do not act as I do here because it is much like the common refrain that "one should not bite the hand that feeds you" but they feed us only so long as we go along with their falsifications and distortions. But we must all use these and any and all other avenues that can be utilized because the battles of today are of the mind and undertaken with knowledge. This site can continue to contribute much and I am very glad it is there. Keep it going and improve it as we here in what some of us call San Quilmas by the sacred waters of the Yanaguana will continue to struggle as no one is truly free or has real "liberty" under fraudulent circumstances where the record is built upon lies and falsehoods. If my Brothers on the Res do not have equal dignity under law, then I, no matter how much money I could make, do not have equal dignity. Ahomm.
